Clans are changing the “fame” game

Lanistae, you’ve been waiting for what feels like a lifetime –  but finally, the Clan System is coming to Gladiator Heroes! And with it come some very exciting changes to “fame” as you know it.


Rebalancing fame

Once the mighty Clan System has been implemented, the fame of ALL players will be rebalanced and integrated into a rebuilt League of Heroes system (this means most players will end up losing some fame after the rebalance).

After that point, fame will only be earned by winning multiplayer matches, and any fame that a gladiator earns will be assigned to the player’s city as a whole, instead of it being distributed among the gladiators like it has been previously.

This means that missions, event matches and challenges will no longer provide any fame for your gladiators or your city.

Now the only way to call the Gods’ attention will be to defeat other players in glorious multiplayer combat.

Teamwork makes the dream work

The moment a player joins a clan, their city’s fame will be added to the clan’s fame. As a result, all clan members will add their respective fame to the overall clan fame.

‘Tis the season to experience clans

The brand new Clan System will be based on something known as “Seasons” and a Season will begin on the first Monday of each Month, and end on the first Sunday of the following month.

During these Seasons, clans will compete to earn as much fame as possible. At the end of each Season, the clans with the highest fame will earn HUGE rewards.

At the end of each Season, the leaderboards will be reset and the competition will start once more.

Don’t panic; your fame will be preserved, so as soon as you fight at least once again in the new Season, you will be reinserted into the leaderboard at the same rank you achieved the previous Season, so you can continue climbing the League of Heroes to reach the ultimate glory!

Show off your Prestige

If you managed to reach God II (the highest league level) and continue to increase your fame, all that “surplus” fame will be converted into “Prestige points” when the Season ends.

Prestige points will be permanent, and will create the perfect way to show off to the world how glorious your clan is, as well as warning your foes that you’re not somebody to be messed with.

Only the most persevering lanistae will be able to claim the glory bestowed by the Gods, so push your limits and climb to the top with the help of your clan mates!

Using order of initiative in your ultimate combat strategy

From lightning-speed assassins to delayed defenders, we explore everything that affects the order of initiative, and how you can incorporate it to create the ultimate strategy.


Movement + (attack – armour) = initiative

Your gladiator’s statistics are influenced by a wide range of factors. In terms of initiative, your gladiators’ movement stats are the most important factor.

This means that if your gladiators are all the same level and rank, the class with the highest movement stats will move first.

The different classes’ movement stats are as follows:

  • Dual-Wields: 4
  • Sword and Shield: 3
  • Spearman: 3
  • Two-Hands: 2

It’s not all face value

Looking at the movement stats above, we can see that the Dual-Wield gladiator will always move faster and further than the Two-Hands gladiator, for instance, and these movement statistics will never change, whether your gladiator is a higher level or not.

However, if your gladiators are in different levels and ranks, their attack statistics will also contribute to their initiative.

Let’s compare two Sword and Shield gladiators; the gladiator with the higher attack (minus armour) will have more initiative and therefore move first.

If, however, you have a Dual-Wield gladiator at rank 2 and a Sword and Shield gladiator at rank 5, it could be that the Sword and Shield attack points are that much higher than the Dual’s. In this case, this will outweigh the Dual’s higher movement points.

This would then cause the Sword and Shield gladiator to have higher initiative, and therefore move before the Dual.

Taking armour into account

Armour can also play a significant role in the initiative of gladiators. The armour statistic of your gladiators will be removed from the attack statistic.

Let’s say you have 2 Dual Wield gladiators at the same rank and level, however one has more armour, and therefore a higher armour statistic than the other. Whilst this may increase their attack statistic slightly, it will reduce its movement statistic overall compared to the other Dual.

Implement initiative in your combat strategy

Taking advantage of the order of initiative in combat can give you an incredible strategic advantage in your battles, so here are a few things to bare in mind in order to get closer to the ultimate victory.

Initial placement could make or break your combat success

Dual-Wield gladiators will often be the fastest gladiators in combat. If your opponent is using other gladiator classes, try placing your Duals so that they are close enough to reach the enemy, whilst the enemy is too far to reach them.

This will mean your Dual will be able to make the first attack and potentially retreat to danger without being damaged first.

It also helps if you put your Duals directly in front of your Two-Hands gladiators as their speed will make up for the Two-Hands’ slow start.

Take full advantage of your gladiator’s skills to exploit movement

If your Two-Hands gladiators have jump skills such as Jump Area Attack, Stun Jump, or Jump Shockwave, try placing them further away from the enemy.

This can be beneficial as they can jump to reach the enemy whilst implementing an attack.
This can significantly make up for their low movement points and reduces time wasted for the gladiator to move towards the enemy.

If your HQ is past level 11 and you’ve already hired a mighty Spearman, they can be extremely tactical to use against slower gladiators. With their spear throwing skills, they can exploit movement points and attack the enemy without having to move anywhere at all.

Taking full advantage of your gladiator’s skills and movement can be the deciding reason whether your team of fighters fights their way to the ultimate glory, or ultimately dies trying.

Why your Feedback on Gladiator Heroes Matters to Us

Whether you’re an avid mobile gamer or just an occasional fan, sending feedback to big gaming companies can often feel like talking to a brick wall. Do they really care what I think about a game? Are my ideas noticed?

From its very conception, Gladiator Heroes has been developed and improved based on user feedback.

“When initial players said: ‘we want multiplayer’, we added multiplayer”, recounts César Ríos, development team lead for the game, “When they said they wanted a forge, we added a forge”.

Several updates have been planned for the coming months before the global launch, all based on the feedback and ideas of our users.

“We’re really open for everyone to propose changes or improvements in the characteristics of the game ,” adds Ríos.

Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing since the game was first started over two years ago.

Our small team – just four programmers and four artists – have had to develop several patches to fix bugs and errors in the game. Right now, they’re working on a solution for some users whose quarries aren’t producing stone.

“We really regret any inconveniences caused,” says Adrián Mesa, game programmer, “Being a small team, new patches sometimes take time”.

“As soon as we find a solution, we will publish a patch to correct this bug.”

There is a solution, however, for Android users who’ve been stuck on a loading screen with clouds while trying to access the missions map.

“Got to to the options menu in the city; the first option when opening the dropdown,” Mesa explains, “Go to graphics, and set shadows as ‘off’, then try to access the map again.”

An Interview with César Ríos, development team lead for Gladiator Heroes

We sit down with César, who heads the development and design team behind Gladiator Heroes, to talk about the game’s initial conception, development, and their plans for the future.

Where did the idea for Gladiator Heroes come from?

The idea for the game came when we finished the last project we were working on in 2014. The team finished and we had to start working on the next game.

So, we evaluated the options and knowledge that we had in the team, and where the market was at that time. We saw that the games that were always among the top positions were strategy and city-building games.

We started to look for an idea that could fit within that stream, while giving it its own, unique personality.

We came across the idea of battles between gladiators, in which you have a city to keep developing your gladiators, then send them to combat against other players in multiplayer mode, or against the game itself.

How did you start developing the characters and gameplay?

The game’s development process at first focused on the combat system, which was our base. We had the art team and the programming design team. So before we even started to program, we began to design the game with paper and pencil.

We bought gladiator figurines, dice, cards, and with that we printed on a piece of paper the scene for the game and we started to plot out the game design process: how the characters moved, how they attacked, what types of characters there were.

Once we had all that polished, we began testing it with people and changing our ideas.

When we saw that people were starting to like the game, that everyone was entertained, and that instead of developing a game we were actually playing it, at that moment we said “we have something good, we’re going to stop here, and we’re going to begin programming it”.

At the same time, the art team was looking for a graphic aspect of the game that both adults and children would like. They started to look for a cartoon aspect, that wasn’t too childish, but not too realistic or ‘adult’ so that kids didn’t like it either. That’s how we arrived at the imagery that we have today.

Why is it worth the wait for the global launch of Gladiator Heroes?

We’ve had the game in various different countries for a bit more than a year, making sure that all the systems we have – multiplayer, all the game parametres – work correctly so that everyone enjoys the game, and so that we don’t have any problems when the game launches globally.

Apart from this, we’ve been collecting all the feedback that people have given us about the game, and we’ve been adding improvements that they’ve requested.

We’re really happy and looking forward for the game to come out so that we can see the reaction that it gets once it’s available globally for everyone.

What’s the biggest challenge that you’ve had to face in the game’s development?

The biggest challenge that we had with the game was that we had to take a lot of risks with the combat system.

When we started working there was a trend to create the same sort of combat system, which a lot of different games had success with, but we didn’t want to follow this path – we wanted to innovate and go beyond.

We had to design a completely different combat system, and we had to work really hard to make sure that it made sense, so that it was simple to play, but also that if you’ve been playing for a year there will still be challenges and you can still improve your statistics and strategies.

This has probably been the greatest challenge we’ve had with the project.

Can you tell me a bit more about the multiplayer system – how does it work?

At the beginning when the game was launched in a few countries for testing it didn’t have multiplayer mode, because we were basically just testing all of the simple characteristics of the game, the combat system and the city, but we quickly began to receive feedback from users that they wanted multiplayer, that they wanted to compete with their friends and on a global level.

We started to design the multiplayer combat system. Right now, you can battle your gladiators against any other user in the world, and you have rankings – online, locally, and with your friends on Facebook.

In the near future, there will also be the possibility to unite your gladiators in clans with your friends and colleagues and engage in clan-versus-clan duals on a global scale to see who is the most powerful clan in the world.
